In reference to Flowers for Algernon, Do you think the gift of intelligence is a blessing or curse?

I feel that the gift of intelligence is both a blessing and a curse. To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when Charlie is dumber than normal people, he was made fun of. When Charlie was intelligent, Charlie was able to enjoy certain aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. However, to a certain extent, the gift of intelligence is a curse as ignorance is bliss.

To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when you are dumber then normal people, you will be ostracized by society. As shown in Flowers for Algernon, there was a mentally retarded teenager working as a dishwasher. When he broke some plates and was told to clear up the mess, he smiled rather innocently. Many customers who saw the incident started to make fun of the dishwasher and teased him about his dumbness.

Another reason that intelligence is a blessing is because when you are intelligent, you will be able to enjoy many aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. You will also be able to invent and discover things that make big contributions to mankind. In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie started treating Miss Kinnian more like a girlfriend as compared to like a teacher before the operation; he fell in love with Miss Kinnian. He was also able to discover the Algernon-Gordon effect and make a large contribution to mankind.

The gift of intelligence is also a curse. As the saying goes: ignorance is bliss. If you do not know some things, you may actually be happier than if you know them. Charlie Gordon was happier before the operation because he thought he had friends. As he got more intelligent he found out that his “friends” do not actually like him and only want to make fun of him.

Also, when you are intelligent, you may start to do some things that are unfair When you are dumb, you would not think of doing such things. An example would be Charlie Gordon laughing at the teenage dishwasher when he broke the plates. He has forgot that he was also like the dishwasher before the operation.

In conclusion,To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when Charlie is dumber than normal people, he was made fun of. When Charlie was intelligent, Charlie was able to enjoy certain aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. However, to a certain extent, the gift of intelligence is a curse as ignorance is bliss.

the " finer things in life"

I think that Charlie might be interested in a television documentary as he was too stupid to understand it last time. Now with increased intelligence, he would be able to understand what the documentary is talking about. He should watch and understand a television documentary before going dumb again.

I feel that watching educational shows is good for him as he would be able to see and learn things he has never seen or heard before. Moreover, it would be an enriching experience for him. This way, he can know about things he has never seen before.

Argumentative essay

Should the experiment have taken place?

From Doctor Nemur and Doctor Strauss's point of view, I think they felt the experiment should have taken place. They just wanted to use Charlie as a test subject and they did not care whether Charlie was affected by the experiment so that they could get famous.

From Charlie’s parents’ point of view, they would probably ask Charlie to take the operation as it can improve their son’s mental capabilities and there could be more communication between them. But if they knew the full consequence of the operation, they probably would not let him take the operation too.

From Fanny’s point of view, she probably would not want Charlie to take the experiment as it is going against god to meddle with intelligence.

From Mr. Steven Ng’s point of view, he probably would ask Charlie to take the experiment as he would be able to get a lot of money.

From Charlie’s colleague’s point of view, I think they would prefer Charlie when he was retarded, as they had more fun making fun of him before the operation.

Finally, from my point of view, I feel that Charlie should not have gone for the operation as he was happier before the operation and he was more clever before the operation. But if he knew he had made a great contribution to science, he would probably be happy too.
