In reference to Flowers for Algernon, Do you think the gift of intelligence is a blessing or curse?

I feel that the gift of intelligence is both a blessing and a curse. To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when Charlie is dumber than normal people, he was made fun of. When Charlie was intelligent, Charlie was able to enjoy certain aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. However, to a certain extent, the gift of intelligence is a curse as ignorance is bliss.

To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when you are dumber then normal people, you will be ostracized by society. As shown in Flowers for Algernon, there was a mentally retarded teenager working as a dishwasher. When he broke some plates and was told to clear up the mess, he smiled rather innocently. Many customers who saw the incident started to make fun of the dishwasher and teased him about his dumbness.

Another reason that intelligence is a blessing is because when you are intelligent, you will be able to enjoy many aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. You will also be able to invent and discover things that make big contributions to mankind. In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie started treating Miss Kinnian more like a girlfriend as compared to like a teacher before the operation; he fell in love with Miss Kinnian. He was also able to discover the Algernon-Gordon effect and make a large contribution to mankind.

The gift of intelligence is also a curse. As the saying goes: ignorance is bliss. If you do not know some things, you may actually be happier than if you know them. Charlie Gordon was happier before the operation because he thought he had friends. As he got more intelligent he found out that his “friends” do not actually like him and only want to make fun of him.

Also, when you are intelligent, you may start to do some things that are unfair When you are dumb, you would not think of doing such things. An example would be Charlie Gordon laughing at the teenage dishwasher when he broke the plates. He has forgot that he was also like the dishwasher before the operation.

In conclusion,To a large extent, the gift of intelligence is a blessing because when Charlie is dumber than normal people, he was made fun of. When Charlie was intelligent, Charlie was able to enjoy certain aspects of life that dumber people do not understand. However, to a certain extent, the gift of intelligence is a curse as ignorance is bliss.
